Research Focus

The mass spectrometry group provides infrastructure and service for mass spectrometric analysis of organic compounds. Mass spectrometry at the institute is divided into two parts: low-resolution mass spectrometry, which is organized in an open access mode whenever possible and high-resolution mass spectrometry and proteomics, which are organized in service mode.

“Low-resolution mass spectrometry”

  • Analysis of small molecules using GC/EI-MS, HPLC/ESI-MS, HPLC/APCI-MS, MALDI-MS, direct injection
  • Structure determination of low molecular-weight compounds using HPLC/ESI-MSn
  • Analysis of intact proteins using HPLC/ESI-MS, MALDI-MS
  • Preparative separations of small molecules using prep-HPLC/MS

“Proteomics”

For proteomics issues nano-HPLC/ESI-MS/MS instruments are used and data evaluation is performed in a qualitative or relative quantitative manner using mainly „label-free“ or SILAC approaches.

  • Protein identification after enzymatic digest
  • Relative quantification of proteins in complex mixtures up to complete lysates
  • Identification of target proteins of bioactive small molecules e.g. after „pull-down“ experiments
  • Identification of protein-protein interactions e.g. after immunoprecipitations
  • Identification of posttranslational modifications
  • Hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry
  • Thermal Proteom Profiling (TPP)
