Philippe Bastiaens was born in the Netherlands and studied biochemistry and molecular physics at Wageningen University, where he received his PhD in biochemistry in 1992. As postdoctoral fellow he first worked at the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences and Wageningen University and later at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen. In 1997 he became head of his own research group in the field of cell biophysics at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in London. In 2000 Philippe Basti-aens was appointed group leader of the cell biology and biophysics programme at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory EMBL in Heidelberg. During this period he also held a professorship at the University of Amsterdam, where he focused on time-resolved imaging of biochemical reactions in cells.
In 2006 Philippe Bastiaens was appointed to two concurrent positions in Dortmund: He is director of the Department of Systemic Cell Biology at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology. In addition, he holds a full professorship in cell biology and biochemistry in the Department of Chemistry at the Technische Universität Dortmund.
