Dr. Jürgen Block |
Today more than ever, researchers must rely on having fast access to the most important scientific publications and databases. For this purpose the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology maintains its own special library, which contains approximately 15 000 books and series of volumes and 25 900 bound journals covering the fields of biochemistry, organic chemistry, molecular and cell biology, protein chemistry and structural biology.
Digital information
In addition, the library is constantly expanding its offering of electronic media. Today the digital library already has licenses for more than 6400 electronic journals. Researchers and guest users have access to these general and subject-specific online databases from their workstations or the library reading room terminals. The Electronic Document Server (EDoc) of the Max Planck Society records all publications of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology in its directory as well as postdoctoral theses, dissertations and degree theses of members of the Institute in full text or as link to the full text.
Catalogue
The complete collection of the library is recorded electronically in the catalogue of the library information system ALEPH. This catalogue can be accessed from any computer logged onto the Internet as Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC).
Use
Institute staff can use the library round the clock. External visitors can also use the library after registering at the reception desk during opening hours.
Several PCs with Internet access, a photocopier, a colour laser printer and a black-and-white laser printer are available for all users in the reading room. Library users are also welcome to use their own laptops in the library.
Loan and distance loan policy
All books, series and current periodicals can be freely accessed in the reading room. Borrowing books for home use is not possible since the collection must be accessible at all times.
Older volumes of periodicals and books are in the closed stacks and are available on request as well. Media not in the Institute’s collection can be requested online.
