Prof. Dr. Andrea Musacchio
Andrea Musacchio wurde am 11. Juli 1964 in Rom geboren. Er hat Biologie an der Tor Vergata Universität in Rom (1985-1990) studiert. Er hat von 1991 bis 1995 bei Matti Saraste am European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)/Universität Heidelberg seine Promotion abgelegt.
Von 1995-1998 war er Postdoctoral Fellow an der Harvard Medical School in der Arbeitsgruppe von Stephen C. Harrison, bis er 1999 nach Italien als Gruppenleiter in das Department of Experimental Oncology des European Institute of Oncology in Mailand zurückkehrte. Dort wurde er 2006 als Professor berufen. Im Jahr 2009 wurde er zum Mitglied der Europäischen Organisation für Molekularbiologie (EMBO) gewählt.
Seit Januar 2011 ist er Direktor der Abteilung Mechanistische Zellbiologie am Max-Planck-Institut für molekulare Physiologie.
Seit 2012 ist er Honorarprofessor an der Universität Duisburg-Essen. Er hat zwei ERC Advanced Grants (2009 und 2015) und einen ERC Synergy Grant (2021) erhalten. 2020 hat er den Vorsitz der Sektion Biologie und Medizin der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft übernommen. Für seine bahnbrechenden strukturbiologischen Arbeiten zur Verteilung des Erbmaterials während der Zellteilung wurde er mit dem Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz-Preis 2020 geehrt, der höchsten wissenschaftlichen Auszeichnung Deutschlands.
