Willkommen am MPI für molekulare Physiologie

Jeden Tag sorgen Billionen von Zellen im Körper dafür, dass wir sehen, denken, sprechen und uns bewegen können. Woher weiß jede Zelle, was ihre Aufgabe ist? Wie kann aus einer unvorstellbaren Vielzahl von nanometergroßen Molekülen ein Organismus entstehen, obwohl es keinen Bauplan gibt? Was ist überhaupt „Leben“? Seit Jahrhunderten versuchen Philosophen und Naturforscher, dieses Rätsel zu ergründen. Doch viele Fragen sind bis heute ungeklärt.
Wir wollen wissen, wie die Bausteine der Zellen sich selbst organisieren und dafür sorgen, dass bestimmte chemische Reaktionen zur richtigen Zeit am richtigen Ort geschehen – oder aber Fehler dazu führen, dass Krankheiten wie Krebs entstehen. Dazu erforschen wir die maßgeblichen Prozesse auf mehreren Ebenen. Von einzelnen Molekülen über größere Proteinkomplexe bis hin zu ganzen Zellen.
