Charles Loh Receives Funding from the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation

The Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation awards 900.000 Euros of funding to Dr. Charles Loh for the development of novel glycosylation reactions to access pharmaceutically relevant carbohydrate derivatives

1. Juli 2021
The  Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation  has chosen Dr. Chuanjie Loh (Charles), Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology in Dortmund (MPI), for funding with its Plus 3 Perspectives Programme. He will receive 900.000 Euros for up to 3 years. The funding aims at supporting outstanding junior group leaders during their first temporary position and thus to promote a smooth transition to the professorship.

The research work of Charles Loh draws upon nature inspired non-covalent catalysis concepts in developing novel glycosylation reactions – One of the most important reaction class that connects two monosaccharide building blocks. It aims at exploiting scarcely explored interactions such as halogen bonding (XB) and π-interactions in addressing long-standing selectivity challenges in glycosylations. The Loh group aims to combine their strong expertise in the fields of organic synthesis, catalysis and supramolecular chemistry to bring about ground-breaking solutions to carbohydrate chemistry. These studies have the potential to strongly impact the glycosciences and to contribute to catalysis and biomimetic chemistry.

Charles Loh is an Independent Group Leader at the MPI since 2016. The “Plus 3” funding should add time, freedom and flexibility to reach scientific potential, to advance and develop his research programme. It thereby creates the best conditions for long-term-prospects in an optimal research environment. Approximately 80 % of successful “Plus 3” applicants between 2010 to 2017 have obtained professorships, and more than 40 % of them came from abroad.
