The Waldmann lab developed a novel class of pseudo natural products (NPs), pyrano-furo-pyridone (PFP) which combine biosynthetically rarely related pyridine- and dihydropyran natural product fragments. Cheminformatic analysis indicates that the PFPs reside in an area of NP-like chemical space not covered by existing NPs but rather by drugs and related products. Biological investigations revealed the induction of formation of reactive oxygen species and inhibition of mitochondrial complex I.
